Build a complete closing package
The working file includes reconciled bank and card accounts, customer and supplier balances, payroll and tax information. Relevant booking commitments, work orders and inventory records help explain amounts crossing the year end.
Asset purchases, repairs, loans and owner payments retain their supporting documents. A bank payment is not automatically an expense, and an uncollected invoice should not disappear simply because the customer has not paid. The reporting method and tax implications are reviewed separately.
A loan-schedule example
Suppose an illustrative Halifax business pays $18,600 on an equipment loan during the year. The lender statement identifies $14,900 of principal and $3,700 of interest. Retaining that breakdown with the asset record allows the accountant to review the correct treatment instead of treating the entire cash payment as a routine operating cost.
Keep tax and registry responsibilities distinct
Nova Scotia’s eligible corporate lower rate and business limit differ from the federal rules, and a tax year crossing a rate change needs its own calculation. We provide supporting records rather than applying a headline rate to sales.
The provincial registration renewal is also separate from a corporate tax return. The handoff identifies filing responsibilities and outstanding items, while keeping a record of reviewed adjustments. An organized package helps the accountant focus on the actual year-end decisions instead of reconstructing how the business’s balances arose.
Questions about this work
Can you work with our current accountant?
Yes. We agree the schedules and format needed for the handoff, with your permission to share the completed package.
Does year-end bookkeeping file the T2?
No. Bookkeeping preparation and tax submission are separate responsibilities and must be included explicitly in the engagement.
